731 I am a big fan of John Bowen. I have read all his three previous books, so I was eager to read this new one.And it is a good book, indeed. As a sequel to "Where the dead walk", it has some od the old characters, and some new ones. As usual, Bowen writes very well, and his plot and character development keep the reader well interested and entertained.I would have liked to give five stars, but I must say that I found this book slightly less satisfying than the three previous novels for one specific reason. One of the best qualities of those books is that Bowen is able to deal with three completely different genres, and always with great creativity and originality."Where the dead walk" is a paranormal thriller, but it is highly unpredictable and has many interestind deviations from what one could expect in the genre."Vessel" is all another thing, and probably not exactly my preferred genre of fiction (at first sight, it could look like some Dan Brown novel with a little bit of science fiction). But, again, the way the book is developed is highly original and unpredictable, and I really liked it."Deats stalks Kettle street", finally, is more like a "normal" crime story, but it is written in such a new and different perspective that it is totally enjoyable, probably my favourite in the group.So, what about "Crow's cottage"? Well, while it is, as said, very well written and entertaining, I must say that it is more "conventional" in the way it relates to the chosen genre. Which is, again, a paranormal thriller, or rather crime story, but this time definitely more similar to the general trend of the genre itself. There are old mysteries, there is of course a paranormal aspect which is not, however, really a major component of the plot, and there is a gradual and well balanced series of discoveries that slowly bring us to the truth. All very good, but I don't see here the same ability to change the rules of the genre, to surprise the reader, as I had found in the previous books.That said, I am always sure that Bowen is a very gifted author, and I look forward to reading his next book. Maybe dealing with some completely new literary genre, and surprising us again.
